It's Only One Straw....

"It's only one straw," said 8 billion people.  How often do we buy things which will pollute the planet and think “Oh, this isn’t really going to make a difference..”?
If you’ve seen the news lately, one of the trending topics is microplastics and their invasion of our bodies! While not much is known exactly how they’re getting into our bodies, or the extent to which they impact our health, we all can agree this is not healthy!
Microplastics is a term used to describe plastic particles less than 5mm in length. The average person ingests about one credit card worth of microplastics each week! That’s 52 credit cards worth per year! Some microplastics are filtered out of our bodies through our digestive systems, but others enter our blood streams, deep into our lungs, and even breastmilk. This means that even as we try to reduce plastics, we have already contaminated the next generation’s bodies!
We can’t avoid microplastics that are already in the water, air or soil, but we can take steps to limit our exposure. Some realistic changes we can all make are:
•Avoid plastic anything! When you have a choice, choose a sustainable or recyclable material.
•If you do have to use plastic, try to upcycle instead of purchasing new.
•Limit the use of plastics for food, drinks, and baby items (such as baby bottles).
•Buy a reusable water bottle and skip the disposable plastic ones. Be sure to properly wash your water bottle to avoid any yucky mold or build up.
•Swap out plastic and single-use straws for reusable food grade silicone or metal ones.
•Recycle properly - if a load is contaminated, most often the entire load gets sent to the dump! To learn more about what can be recycled in your area, contact your local waste disposal.
•Donate to organizations that reduce waste and promote sustainability and cleanup of our planet.
•Support local companies who prioritize limiting the use of plastic in their products.
Over the past few years, we have made a conscious effort to find packaging that is sustainable, green, plastic-free, and local or USA-made. We are proud to say that we offer most of our products in plastic-free packaging that can be repurposed! When we do have to use plastic for quality purposes, we make every effort to ensure it’s high qualify and recycled, to minimize the amount of new plastic being generated.
Do you have a helpful hint on how to reduce plastic in your day to day life? If so, let us know!
