Pop quiz time!

What sounds like a safe, natural ingredient found in many products including food, but is actually extremely harmful for the planet?
Palm oil is “an edible vegetable oil derived from the mesocarp of the fruit of the oil palms”...still sounds like a great ingredient so far, right?
Word Wildlife states that palm oil is “a small ingredient in the U.S. diet, but more than half of all packaged products Americans consume contain palm oil”. So what’s the problem?
A cheaper alternative to other vegetable oils, the demand for palm oil is increasing rapidly, which is leading to sprawling plantations expanding. In addition to concerning treatment of employees, these plantations are destroying tropical forests, home to endangered species. Ok, but that’s far away and doesn’t impact us - not true!
Tropical forests are a vital part of the entire planet and have a great diversity of plant and animal life. They also provide a major source of oxygen, absorbing carbon dioxide and turning it into oxygen, stabilizing Earth’s climate. They are an important part of maintaining the water cycle, protecting against flood, drought, and erosion. They also are a source for food and medicine, not to mention the home for many tribal persons. They are a literal lifeline for all of us!
Now that you are more aware of this ingredient, what can you do? First, share the knowledge! We all know knowledge is power, and consumers can make a big impact by changing their spending and consumption habits. Start checking labels and looking for palm oil as an ingredient. Support companies who only use sustainably harvested palm oil, or even better, none at all!
We are committed to not only Making Natural the New Normal, but also keeping our planet healthy! We do our best to use local natural or organic ingredients that are sustainably and responsibly sourced. Without a healthy planet, healthy people can’t survive!
